The Problem

Hospital Ward

In 2007 a number of national bodies reported on Healthcare Associated Infections (HAIs) including those that have immunity to antibiotics (ie MRSA & C. difficile).

  • In the UK the National Audit office stated that “around 9,000 people were recorded as having died with MRSA or C. difficile infections”. The Department of Health confirmed that 300,000 was the best estimate of the number of HAI’s per year. The estimated cost to NHS hospitals of caring for people that acquire an HAI is over £1 billion a year.
  • In Europe the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control published that “Health-Care-Associated-Infections are responsible 37,000 deaths annually and contribute to a further 110,000 infections across the EU. The total annual healthcare cost for the EU-27 can be estimated at €5.5 billion.”
  • In the United States the prestigious journal Infection Control Today reported “Every year about 2 million patients develop serious infections as a result of hospitalization in the USA…. America spends $4.5 to $5.7 billion annually on the treatment of HAI’s….. HAI's are estimated to be one of the top 10 causes of death in the United States”.
